Kustom Krafters was founded in 1972 by Forest Shumway. He and his younger brother Glenn were national 4-H Club champions in woodworking when he was 16 years old. They made matching beds that are still on display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Their father, Nathan Shumway, coached them in this project. Nathan was also a cabinet builder and fine woodworker.
Gilbert, Forest's third son, joined the business not long after he graduated from Sylvania High School in 1974. The oldest son, David, also worked with Forest for several years in Toledo and now does cabinet work with his son in Puerto Rico.
